Summer Season Produce

Summer Season Produce

Summertime and the living is easy. It’s also a happy time of year for this foodie with the gorgeous produce in abundant colors and variety. My summer highlights revolve around farmer’s market strolls, fresh corn on the cob at the fair, berry picking and of course peach bellinis and passion fruit margaritas!

Growing up my mom would always make rhubarb pies and peach cobblers. While I haven’t perfected my pie crust skills (because the Gluten Free options leave a lot to be desired!) I am hard at work on some tasty summer traditions for my own littles.  You’ll be happy to know, we eat pretty simply during the summer and let the flavors of fresh fruits and veggies do the talking.

When to buy organic

When possible I try and solely buy organic produce but sometimes at places like Costco, where the produce and the price are on point, I often make exceptions for fruits and veggies I know aren’t as crucial to buy organic. I do however make a point to soak them a little longer in water + vinegar before consuming. That said, there are some common summer fruits that are especially important to buy organic.

When the USDA’s pesticide data program releases its annual list of produce samples with residues that exceed tolerable levels, strawberries and cherries are always on the top of the list. (Please always buy organic strawberries!!!!) The following is a checklist for in season produce that is best to buy organic based on government pesticide testing.
